reddit will tighten verification to keep out human-like AI bots

TechCrunch, 6 May 2025. Paraphrase of Huffman's announcement:

  • Reddit will verify that accounts belong to people, to keep the site human as bots get better at sounding like people.
  • The goal is proving you are a person without giving your name. Humanness, not identity.

Why it is here: the E term in HI = E × P × C is "experience that happened to a person". A bot has E = 0 by definition. If bots can post at scale, H gets polluted with S from the inside, and the ratio in the scarcity formula collapses. Verification is the defence of E.

The design constraint is the interesting part: pseudonymity is what makes people write the honest version. Verify the human, keep the handle.

    What it proves: the company knows the asset is only worth something if it stays human, and is spending on that.

    This is about the stock, the token is unrelated, correct? And verification without identity is a hard problem.

      Correct on both. This is Reddit Inc. policy, nothing to do with $HI, which is a token on the HI/RDDT pair and not Reddit stock. And yes it is hard. That is why it is a subreddit and not a footnote.

    Fourteen years on the same handle. Nobody knows my name and everybody in my hobby sub knows exactly which of my tools I have broken. That is the version of identity that matters.
